How to use and store saffron threads

Whole saffron threads bring colour and aroma to rice, tagines, risotto, and sweet dishes. Start with a recipe, give the threads time to steep, and protect the rest from light, moisture, and heat.

How much saffron should I use?

Follow your recipe’s quantity. The amount depends on the size and type of dish and the strength of flavour you prefer. A few threads are a starting point for experimenting, not a universal measurement. Make a note of the quantity you use so you can adjust the next batch.

Star Saffron’s retail tin contains 2 g (0.07 oz) of whole Moroccan saffron threads. The number of dishes a tin will make depends on how much you use each time.

Bloom the threads before cooking

Place the threads in a little warm water and leave for about ten minutes. Add both the infusion and the threads when your recipe directs. Count the steeping water as part of any measured recipe liquid.

Where to keep the tin

  • Close the screw-top tin after each use.
  • Store it somewhere cool, dark, and dry.
  • Keep it away from the stove, direct sunlight, and steam.
  • Use dry utensils when taking threads from the tin.

Refer to your product label for any batch-specific storage or date information.
